Trauma Counseling

Past experiences do not stay in the past. Trauma can drive present-day reactions (anger, anxiety, withdrawal, compulsive behavior, relationship problems, and emotional numbness) long after the original events. Trauma-informed counseling helps process what has been carried too long and reduces its power over your present life.

Recognize the Pattern

Patterns You May Recognize

Intense emotional or physical reactions to certain situations

Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares

Avoiding people, places, or situations that trigger distress

Feeling constantly on edge, hypervigilant, or easily startled

Emotional numbness or difficulty connecting with others

Using substances or behavior to cope with unresolved pain

Difficulty trusting people even when they have earned it

Anger or irritability that seems disproportionate

Shame or guilt about things that were not your fault

A sense that something is fundamentally wrong but you cannot identify it

Is This You?

Who This Is For

Men, women, and couples dealing with the effects of past trauma, including childhood experiences, combat or service-related trauma, abuse, neglect, betrayal, accidents, loss, or other events that continue to affect daily life. You do not need a formal PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma-informed counseling.

A Path Forward

How Counseling Can Help

Trauma counseling helps you understand how past experiences have shaped your current patterns. Rob uses trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR, to help process traumatic memories, reduce their emotional charge, build healthier coping mechanisms, and restore a sense of safety and control. The goal is not to relive the past; it is to reduce its hold on the present.

The Method

Rob's Approach

Rob is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and other trauma-informed methods. His approach prioritizes safety, stability, and pacing. He does not push clients faster than they are ready. He combines clinical tools with the kind of direct, compassionate presence that helps people feel safe enough to begin the work.

What to Expect

What a Session May Involve

Trauma counseling sessions may include psychoeducation about trauma responses, stabilization and grounding techniques, EMDR processing when appropriate, cognitive-behavioral strategies for managing triggers, and building resilience and healthy coping skills. The pace is always set by what you are ready for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to talk about what happened in detail?+

Not necessarily. Some trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR, do not require detailed verbal recounting of traumatic events. Rob will discuss options with you.

What is EMDR?+

EMDR is an evidence-supported therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories. It uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements) while you briefly focus on a distressing memory, reducing its emotional intensity over time.

How long does trauma counseling take?+

It varies significantly depending on the nature and duration of the trauma. Some focused issues can be addressed in several sessions. Complex or long-term trauma typically requires more time. Rob will discuss realistic expectations.
